The firm is currently Zacks Rank # 3 - Hold, and it also has a longer-term recommendation of nderperfom. For investors looking for a Zacks Rank # 1 Strong Buy, Ignite Restaurant Group Inc. (IRG) and The Wendy's Company (WEN) could be the options.

Margins matter. The more Ignite Restaurant Group (Nasdaq: IRG  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Ignite Restaurant Group's competitive position could be.

Recently giant food conglomerate, Cargill announced it had partnered with the Swiss biosynthetic pharmaceutical company, Evolva (EVE:SW), to develop a more consistent and less expensive stevia sweetener via Evolva microbial fermentation-based process. This is big news for the future of stevia because a microbial fermentation-based process does not have to rely on soil conditions or weather, and stevia can be manufactured anywhere, thus having the potential of guaranteeing an endless supply line of stevia. Through the microbial fermentation, the manufacturer has the capability to process the key sweet individual components of stevia using low-cost plant sugars, and allows for the individual components of stevia, regardless of how minute, to be developed creating blends in any volume, which then could open the door for these manufacturers to fine-tune its stevia to local tastes. But what would be most attractive is that, because the fermentation process does not require the entire plant, the method could conceivably shave upwards of 70% off the cost of producing stevia extracts.

10 Best Growth Stocks To Watch For 2014

On Jul 5, 2013, we reaffirmed our long-term recommendation on Highwoods Properties Inc. (HIW), a real estate investment trust (REIT), at Neutral. Our decision rests on the company successful portfolio repositioning measures. However, continued volatility in the office sector with job cuts, and stiff competition from commercial property developers remain our concerns.

Why Neutral?

Highwoodsfirst-quarter 2013 core FFO per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny and the prior-year quarter figure by 2 cents. The company has successfully implemented its strategic plans of portfolio repositioning. These position Highwoods favorably for growth. However, a rise in operating expenses acted as the dampener.

As part of the restructuring activity, Highwoods recently bought a Class A office property One Alliance Center which is the sister building of its previously acquired Two Alliance Center. The consequent strength in balance sheet and liquidity position will likely help the company to take advantage of distressed asset selling as office and retail asset values continue to fall post recession.

When looking at small cap stocks, it is useful to compare the company with others that have expanded in both share price and size. For those considering investing in the $100 billion staffing industry, the growth of TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI) shows what could be the potential path for Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC), as both operate in the $29 billion demand labor sector. Other firms have done well in the staffing industry include Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX) and ManPower Group (NYSE: MAN).

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

Even though the stock market rallied on Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's remarks with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) and Standard & Poor's 500 Index (NYSE: SPY) surging, the long term winners will be stocks in the staffing industry such as Paychex(NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), Robert Half (NYSE: RHI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

5 Best Airline Stocks To Watch For 2015

As last year drew to a close, I reviewed the stock of Alaska Air Group, (NYSE: ALK  ) , and determined that it had room to climb in 2014. So far, so good; through the first quarter of this year, the stock has gained roughly 29%. Is the Seattle-based airline, one of the most efficient U.S. major carriers, getting ahead of itself?

The short answer to this question would appear to be no. While 29% is a precocious gain for just a handful of months, and though I'd love to take credit for a brilliant stock pick, the Dow Jones U.S. Airlines Index, which posted a brute gain of 86% last year, is up another 28% year to date. It's entirely possible that Alaska Airlines is getting bid up in the larger demand for airline stocks. Let's peel the aviation onion back a bit to get a closer read on Alaska's prospects for the rest of this year.

Earnings and valuation continue to look attractive
Alaska Airlines continues to impress investors with each earnings report. In its most recent filing for Q4 2013, the company reported record earnings of $78 million, a 68% increase over the prior year's quarter. The positive earnings were driven primarily by a 7% increase in revenue. When a company can increase earnings so significantly, it can offset a rise in the stock in terms of relative valuation, and we see this phenomenon at work with Alaska Airlines. When we reviewed the company's stock in November, ALK traded at 11.3 times trailing 12-month earnings. Since then, even after its price appreciation of more than one-fourth of its value, the airline's P/E ratio has remained in the same ballpark, at 13.0. This compares favorably to the peer group we previously compared ALK to. Currently, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) trades at 22.5 trailing 12-month earnings, and the P/E ratios of the rest of the group are as follows:Spirit Airlines-- 25.3,Republic Airways Holdings-- 19.1, andJetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) -- 17.6. Thus, relative to its competitors, Alaska still looks cheap.

5 Best Airline Stocks To Watch For 2015: Allegiant Travel Co (ALGT)

Allegiant Travel Company, incorporated on April 4, 2006, is a leisure travel company focused on providing travel services and products to residents of small, underserved cities in the United States. The Company operates a passenger airline marketed primarily to leisure travelers in small cities, allowing it to sell air transportation both on a stand-alone basis and bundled with the sale of air-related and third party services and products. In addition, it provides air transportation under fixed fee flying arrangements. The Company provides scheduled air transportation on limited frequency nonstop flights between small city markets and leisure destinations. As of February 1, 2013, its operating fleet consisted of 58 MD-80 aircraft and six Boeing 757-200 aircraft providing service on 191 routes to 85 cities including 13 leisure destinations and 72 small cities and including cities served seasonally. In January 2012, the Company took ownership of two MD-80 aircraft. In October 2012, the Company announced the formation of Allegiant Systems, a joint venture with AvIntel and Lixar IT.

The Company provides unbundled air-related services and products in conjunction with air transportation for an additional cost to customers. These optional air-related services and products include use of its Website for purchases, use of its call center for purchases, advance seat assignment, baggage fees, priority boarding, its own travel protection product, change fees, food and beverage purchases on board and other air-related services. The Company offers third party travel products, such as hotel rooms, ground transportation (rental cars and hotel shuttle products) and attractions (show tickets) bundled with the purchase of its air transportation.

The Company provides air transportation through fixed fee agreements and charter service on a seasonal and ad-hoc basis for other customers. As of February 1, 2013, its operating aircraft consisted of 58 MD-80 aircraft and six Boeing 757-200 aircraft. D! uring the year ended December 31, 2012, the Company has entered into purchase agreements to acquire seven Airbus A320 aircraft and operating lease agreements for an additional nine Airbus A319 aircraft.

The Company competes with AirTran, Frontier, Spirit, Southwest, US Airways, Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, Delta, Xtra, United and American.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

DeNardi also rates Alaska Air (ALK), Spirit Airlines (SAVE) and Allegiant Travel (ALGT) as Buys and Southwest, JetBlue Airways (JBLU) and Hawaiian Holdings (HA) as holds.

  • [By Alex Planes]

It's been a bit over two months since my fellow Fool Sean Williams pointed out that Republic, despite its low price, was booking fewer passenger-miles in 2013 and could be set for a fall. Since then, Republic's shares have shed approximately 15% of their value. To counter the possibility of revenue declines, the airline joined Spirit Airlines (NASDAQ: SAVE  ) and Allegiant Travel (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) last month in charging a fee for carry-on baggage, which is more or less the final frontier of irritating airline charges, short of charging you for the oxygen should those masks drop down during an emergency.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Of the 8 publicly-traded US airlines that generated a positive [Return on Invested Capital Weighted Average Cost of Capital] gap, Allegiant Travel (ALGT) generated both the highest absolute after tax ROIC (16.5%) and the greatest pread(ROIC WACC of 10.3 points). Furthermore, Allegiant very strong results were an improvement over what it reported in 2012: 15.4% after tax ROIC and ROIC WACC spread of 9.0 points.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We believe a continuation of healthy earnings and cash flow should create greater opportunities to further shareholder-friendly agendas, as we expect a number of US carriers to either augment or introduce shareholder capital return programs (through dividends and/or share repurchases) within the next several quarters (namely [American Airlines, Alegiant Travel (ALGT), Alaska Air, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines)…we think the stocks will continue to perform well throughout the remainder of year.

It wasn't as big as the Boeing 314, with a smaller wingspan and a shorter range. Yet Boeing modestly calls the DC-3, first flown in 1935, "the greatest airplane of its time," and perhaps "the greatest of all time." Many people agree. Originally built for American Airlines (now US Airways (NYSE: LCC  ) ), the plane soon gained a fan in United Airlines (now United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) ) -- and then it went on to win sales contracts at nearly three dozen airlines and to (in alliance with its DC-2 predecessor) capture more than 90% of the air-passenger market. The DC-3 carried 28 passengers, or slept 14, which doesn't sound like a lot in today's terms. But it was the first plane capable of carrying enough passengers, and carrying them fuel-efficiently enough, to earn its airline owners a profit.

Advisors' Opinion:

US Airways CEO Doug Parker -- who will lead the combined carrier -- has argued strongly that the government should not require the carriers to sell off slots at Reagan Airport as a condition of the merger. However, on balance it is very clear that the merger will decrease competition at the airport, which is not very competitive to begin with. As a result, the DOJ is ultimately likely to require some slot sales to other airlines, allowing low-cost carriers like Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV  ) and JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) to increase service at Reagan Airport.

Top 5 Net Payout Yield Stocks For 2015

They say what good for the goose is good for the gander. Does that same logic apply to mergers and acquisitions?

In the case of Men Wearhouse (MW) and Jos. A. Bank Clothier (JOSB), it would seem so.

Today, Men Warehouse launched a surprise offer to buy the smaller rival for $55 a share, or $1.2 billion. The bid comes just two weeks after Jos. A. Bank abandoned its own unsolicited bid for Men Warehouse.

On Oct. 8, Jos. A. Bank offered to pay $2.3 billion for its larger rival. Arguing that a merger would produce cost savings and the new combined company would benefit from scale. But Men Warehouse rejected the offer as too low. And two weeks ago, Jos. A. Bank announces it was giving up the chase.

But apparently, Men Warehouse sees value in a merger. Stifel Nicolaus analyst Richard A. Jaffe writes:

Given that JOSB has previously stated that they would be willing to be acquired by MW, we anticipate that JOSB will give MW offer considerable consideration. Previously, we did not believe that MW was interested in buying JOSB; that they had numerous initiatives in place and did not believe that MW management valued the JOSB promotional model highly. The situation has changed. The MW board, facing what we believe was pressure from a large shareholder, took a closer look at the opportunity and chose to bid for JOSB.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Smith On Stocks]

Using my assumptions, the common of Agenus might be worth about $7.00 per share in early 2014 based on the royalties from the Glaxo vaccines and the net operating loss carry forward even if every other asset in the company were valued at zero. However, there may be substantial value in Agenus' internal vaccine programs in recurrent and newly diagnosed glioblastoma and the genital herpes vaccine. Based on a comparison to peer companies like Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBO) and ImmunoCellular Therapeutics (IMUC), I believe that the internal programs at Agenus currently may be worth $150 million or $4.45 per share. Adding this to the value of the MAGE A-3 vaccine could produce a stock price of $11.00 in early 2014.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

$7.6 billion IT services firm Computer Sciences (CSC) has been doing some consolidating of its own for the last few months. Shares have been stuck trading between resistance at $54 a share and support down at $50 a share since mid-July. But despite its sideways bent, there's a trade to be made in CSC right now.

Right now, CSC is forming a rectangle pattern, a consolidation setup that's formed by a pair of horizontal resistance and support level at those $54 and $50 price levels. The rectangle pattern gets its name because it basically "boxes in" shares between those two levels. The signal to watch is the break outside of that box. Support at $50 has some extra strength because it's a level that was previously a ceiling for shares back in March and again in May. That's not uncommon for a round number like $50, but it makes an upside breakout a lot more likely from here.

ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) has been a brutal disappointment for investors who thought they were getting a thinking investor's play on the smartphone and tablet revolutions. The maker of protective screens, keyboard covers, and other mobile-gadget accessories has fallen hard after hosing down its outlook twice over the past three months.

    Why Corning?
The company is a giant in specialty glasses and fiber optics. Its fortunes are influenced these days by smartphone and tablet makers such as Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) , which use its glass in their displays. Corning's Gorilla Glass is so strong that it has put a crimp in the business of screen-protecting companies such as ZAGG (NASDAQ: ZAGG  ) . Some worry about Apple's interest in sapphire, though, as it's even stronger than Gorilla Glass (though more expensive) and could threaten Corning.

Top 5 Paper Companies To Watch For 2014

Forbes Dividend Investor subscribers received this update on October 18.

If you read newspapers or listen to talking heads that light up cable TV newsr if you get your news from the likes of Leno, Letterman or Jon Stewartou no doubt know that the 17-day government shutdown is over and that the country isn going to stiff its creditors. Congress and the president bought three more months to figure out what to do about the budget and debt ceiling, so if youe a rational person, you should expect more capital shenanigans in early 2014.

John Elway in Denver, and Brett Favre in Green Bay, conditioned Broncos and Packers fans to expect that they would always pull off the win with a scoring drive in the last two minutes. In similar fashion, our honorable elected officials went down to the wire before striking a deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling.

It been a rather recurrent modus operandi in Washington.  Going back to the summer of 2011, there have been almost as many of these deadlines for doom and government-created crises as there have been movies in the Rocky (six) or Jaws (four) series.
